City leaders celebrate new ADA-accessible boardwalk at Dunwoody Nature Center

Courtesy of Dunwoody Nature Center Dunwoody leaders will gather to celebrate the new boardwalk and wetlands restoration at the Dunwoody Nature Center at a m on Monday Nov according to a release from the city This project has been a long time in the making so it is incredibly rewarding to see it come to life disclosed Dunwoody Nature Center Executive Director Nancy Longacre We are thrilled to invite the inhabitants to walk the new boardwalk experience the restored wetlands and see the transformation firsthand It s a meaningful step forward in our ability to connect people with nature in a sustainable accessible way The new boardwalk is higher longer and wider than the old one proving ADA access to playgrounds at one end Along the way there are outdoor classrooms for studying Dunwoody s aquatic support plus seating and observation decks the release commented Work crews stabilized the banks of Wildcat Creek by adding rock on the water s edge installing a log vane to channel water toward the center of the stream and improving grading They also removed invasive plant species from existing wetlands and planted native vegetation to restore the native forested wetland habitat The new boardwalk is elevated above the -year floodplain reconnecting the wetland and stream ecosystems while also providing better access to educational areas at the Nature Center explained Dunwoody Stormwater Engineer Cody Dallas Restoring the wetlands and stabilizing the streambanks improve water quality and increase habitat for wildlife The project was funded through the city s stormwater reserve and an EPD h grant of The total construction cost was million The post City leaders celebrate new ADA-accessible boardwalk at Dunwoody Nature Center appeared first on Rough Draft Atlanta
